teakettle, teakettle is a four-channel sound installation designed for an igloo. Four teakettles, used as speakers through the use of sound-transducers, and a fifth teakettle was used to make tea for listeners. The source material for the installation was a number of teakettles, struck very lightly at independent speeds. The net effect is a calm exercise in echolocation, with each teakettle letting the patron know their distinct locale every few seconds. Warm oolong tea, the clicking of the installation, the intimate nature of the space, and very dry acoustical environment created a very calm and comfortable environment for those who generously visited the bigloo. Joshua Beckman and Emily Lacy performed inside of the installation adding another dynamic to the piece. More photos can be found here, at the Machine Project Flickr page. The bigloo was desiged by Sean Connaughty, a Minneapolis based artist and the nicest person ever.

This installation was created for the Walker Art Center as part of a 2011 residency with Machine Project.
